Course Summary
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism Tier 1
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Tier 1 course is an introductory programme designed for health and social care staff who require a general awareness of learning disability and autism as part of their role. It provides a foundational understanding of the experiences of people with learning disabilities and autistic people, and the importance of delivering respectful, person-centred support.
The course explores key topics such as communication differences, reasonable adjustments and the impact of health inequalities. It encourages participants to reflect on attitudes, assumptions and behaviours, promoting more inclusive and compassionate practice. Learners gain insight into how small changes in approach, environment and communication can significantly improve outcomes and experiences for individuals accessing services.
Delivered as an interactive session alongside pre-course e-learning, the training combines expert input with the perspectives of people with lived experience. By the end of the course, participants will have greater confidence in recognising individual needs, making appropriate adjustments and contributing to a culture of dignity, safety and inclusion within their workplace.
